The seven “table stakes”

The term “table stakes” refers to the key skills needed for news publishers to thrive in the digital era.

News Catalyst

News Catalyst provides news organizations with digital tools, fosters collaboration, and promotes experimentation especially in where the industry has traditionally underinvested, such as product development, data, analytics, digital storytelling, mobile and engagement.

Better News

Better News is a website where news enterprises can learn about the seven “table stakes,” the tools of Performance Driven Change and the ways that Table Stakes partners have changed their practices to make themselves more sustainable. It features practical, replicable case studies focused on audience and revenue outcomes and is aimed at early adopters and others in the news industry looking to transform their own operations.

Challenge Tracker

The Challenge Tracker is an application designed by News Catalyst and API to help current participants and alumni track their challenges and network with each other.

Cronkite News Lab

The Cronkite News Lab is focused on innovation and transformation in local TV News. The Lab publishes case studies showcasing ‘better practices’ from local TV newsrooms across the country as well as experiments by ASU Cronkite School of Journalism student journalists. The case studies focus on broadcast, digital trends, management and technology.

Poynter Institute

Poynter covers local news transformation through its website and a weekly newsletter, Local Edition. The newsletter often features Table Stakes activities and success stories.

Maynard Institute

The Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education is the nation’s oldest organization dedicated to helping the news media accurately portray all segments of society, particularly those often overlooked, such as communities of color. It drives diversity, equity and inclusion in news media and academia through training, engagement and discussion with journalists, news leaders, storytellers, and entrepreneurs.

Metrics for News

Metrics for News provides news organizations with powerful journalism analytics that go beyond traditional traffic metrics. It’s a strategic tool built around newsroom priorities to grow audiences, deepen engagement and drive subscriptions. Many Table Stakes partners have used the app to inform and empower their new strategies.

American Press Institute

API supports local and community-based media through research, programs and products that foster healthy, responsive and resilient news organizations.
